Event Description

On Wednesday, February 10, Bennett Freeman will speak to us on the topic of “Redefining SRI: Adding Value to Values”. As Senior Vice President of Calvert Investments for Sustainability Research and Policy, Bennett Freeman leads the social, environmental and governance research, analysis, policy and shareholder advocacy work of one of the largest family of sustainable and responsible mutual funds in the U.S. He directs the Sustainability Research Department and serves on the Management Committee of this diversified investment company with over $14 billion assets under management based in Bethesda MD.

Before joining Calvert in April 2006, Freeman led Burson-Marsteller’s Global Corporate Responsibility practice advising multinationals on policy development, stakeholder engagement and communications strategies related to human rights, labor rights and sustainable development. During the Clinton Administration, Freeman served in three positions as a presidential appointee in the U.S. Department of State, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1999 to early 2001 when he directed U.S. bilateral human rights diplomacy around the world. Previously, he served as Senior Advisor to Under Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Stuart Eizenstat from 1997-1999 and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and chief speechwriter for Secretary of State Warren Christopher from 1993-97. As Manager-Corporate Affairs for the GE from 1985-93, he worked on trade policy and export finance; business ethics and corporate responsibility; and a range of public policy, corporate strategy and communications projects based in the company’s Fairfield, CT headquarters and Washington DC Government Relations office.
